Wise Choices does not function without our client advocates. Obviously they are important, but what is an advocate?
While the term advocate serves as both a noun and a verb simultaneously, one describes the person and the other what they do. I have often called these brave souls counselors, but from this day forth, I will always refer to them as advocates. Why, you ask? Because that is exactly who they are!
Here are just a few of the synonyms for advocate:
champion, upholder, supporter, backer, promoter, proponent, spokesperson, campaigner, fighter, crusader
Wow! Ironically, (or not), the only antonym listed was critic. If you have ever visited our center, you will know that the title that has been bestowed upon these individuals rings true to who they are!
So, what do they do? This too directly lines up with Google’s description:
recommend, advise, urge, support, back, favor, endorse, uphold, champion, campaign on behalf of, speak for, promote
I was blown away by how this one word could so accurately and vividly describe so many people AND all they do. However, it wasn’t until I looked at the Latin origin of the word that I truly understood.
As I read those words, it was clear to me that one does not simply become an advocate but are called to it! Wise Choices and our community are extremely blessed by the men and women who have courageously answered that calling!
