It is important to first recognize that these brave souls have been obedient to a calling. I say that because it is truly a commitment. Not only do they subject themselves to the forty hours of volunteer training, but they then commit to be present four hours each week. This committed relationship allows Wise Choices to work seamlessly to accomplish our mission.
Secondly, an advocate commits to step into, at times, very difficult crisis situations and walk hand-in-hand through that situation with her client. Her job is not to judge, scold, chastise or belittle; it is the exact opposite. Our advocates are there to simply love this woman. Whether in our center or in line at the grocery store, each person we meet is dealing with something to some degree. Now, throw in an unplanned pregnancy and you have escalated a struggle to a whole different level. Wise Choices Advocates get the opportunity to be the calm in the storm. Meeting the needs of our clients and loving them unconditionally, where they are, has helped countless women in Wise County to see a clearer path for their lives.
Quoting Advocate Pam Mason, “I volunteer at Wise Choices because I enjoy being there for the girls when they come in and helping to guide them through their struggles. I receive such a blessing when I can bless and encourage them to make positive choices in their life. I know that I am doing the work He has called me to.”
This is where most of our clients are when they enter our doors.
Last but not least, our advocates reap some of the most precious rewards. The relationships forged in the counseling rooms often span years. Often times we get to witness families healed and choosing to make wiser choices for their futures. In fact, several of our staff and volunteers are former clients whose lives have been so positively impacted by Wise Choices that they are eager to help others.
When passion meets compassion you will find a Wise Choices Volunteer & Advocate. Ask yourself: What am I passionate about? Where can I change lives in just 4 hours a week?
